Chelsea and Westminster || Isla:

Streamlining telederm and improving patient experience for two week wait referrals

Having previously announced the rollout of Isla, an innovative visual record, across North West London; it is with great pride that we are now able to report back on the fantastic results the platform is having for two week wait referrals in Telederm.

Through a joint effort with Medical Photography at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, we are seeing significant improvements to their Telederm service, both in terms of efficiency and patient experience. Through Isla, patients are being sent their NUCA Questionnaire via SMS the day before their appointment, which they can complete digitally and upload directly into their medical record. Medical photographers are then able to review a patient’s questionnaire with minimal waiting time and upload the photos into the same medical record which can then subsequently be reviewed by the consultants.

This streamlined process has achieved the following:

  • A 50% reduction in medical photographer time per patient

  • A 2x increase in the resolution of skin lesions presented to clinicians

  • 75% of patients completing and submitting their form in advance of attending their clinic

After a period of testing, Isla is now being used in all Telederm clinics across Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (including Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital), with the learnings garnered here being used as a template for further rollout in Imperial and London North West.

These learnings are testament to the collaborative effort between Isla and the Medical Photography department who guided the tech developments aimed at making the platform a perfect fit for two week wait referrals. The result is a pathway which is convenient for patients, streamlined for photographers and a reduced clinical risk for consultants. We look forward to seeing this model scaled across the region!
